Priscilla Ferguson’s Trowel and Seed is a somber, simple image of a partially rusted trowel and one seed in a sepia tone. The single trowel and the single seed are suggestive of the solitary and meditative nature of gardening, as the photograph highlights the relationship between the person using the trowel and planting the seed. Trowel and Seed is a reminder of the hope and anticipation placed in one seed to grow. The seed appears to be either a pumpkin or squash, and if all goes well in the sowing process, there will be hundreds more seeds to help propagate a full garden. If the seed fails, however, hunger ensues.
