Two men stand on either side of a deer hanging from a tree. Both of the men are full of pride at their skill in bringing home this animal--the man on the left rests his hand on the barrel of his shotgun while the man on the right points his gun toward the sky¾perhaps an indication of who made the shot to kill. It is possible the man on the right is Charles Beverly Hughes himself, to whom the photograph is attributed. While it is not uncommon today to see people photographing themselves with the fish they caught or animals they hunted, this photograph taken in the early 1900s reminds us that the impulse to document ourselves with our accomplishments has occurred since the early days of photographic technology.
