Igor Mischiyev’s photographs of parking garages in East Berlin are a calm respite from the actual experience of being in or attempting to park in a parking garage. Titled Multi Story Car Park, the series depicts moments of stillness, even quietness. In this image, a line of light from the overhead window makes a bright geometric pattern along the curvature of the descending ramp. There is a sense of materiality from the concrete structure, the PVC tubing, wooden accents, and delicate mesh hanging from the ceiling. The photograph is face-mounted to Plexiglas, giving the entire print an ethereal feel. Mischiyev achieves this pleasing composition through post-production by editing out signage or other practical bits of information. These abstract compositions show beauty in a place where it is least expected.
