Rina Castelnuovo has been documenting the conflict between Israel and Palestine for 30 years. Always aware of the fact that Israel is her home, she takes care to show balanced photographs and images that show life and war in all their complicated facets. This photograph was taken in olive groves in Ni’lin, a Palestinian village in the West Bank. During this time, there were weekly protests of a wall being built, and it was the job of the Israeli border policeman in white to keep protesters away. The Palestinian man in the foreground confronts the policeman. Castelnuovo described the situation as “often [resembling a] cat and mouse game but one in which people get killed and injured.” Separating the men and potential violence is a vast field of small flowers, the beauty and delicateness of their presence contrasting with the solid wall and tension between each side.
