Rina Castelnuovo Tel Aviv, Israel, b. 1956

Rina Castelnuovo has been documenting the conflict between Israel and Palestine for 30 years. Always aware of the fact that Israel is her home, she takes care to show balanced photographs—ones that are not overtly violent or that are sentimental—but rather images that show life and war in all their complicated facets. In this image, an Israeli tank rolls by and a man raises his arms almost in surrender but rather in prayer. Castelnuovo describes, “[a]s they crossed each other, the religious man raised his arms as if in a sign of a blessing toward the soldiers on their way to the front.” In this moment, Castelnuovo shows a gesture of peace, of love, of solidarity given to those who must fight.
